What an AI assistant is
A tool you talk to in plain language that writes, analyses, researches and now completes multi-step tasks for you.
Under the hood is a large language model: software trained on huge amounts of text that predicts useful next words. Modern assistants add tools on top: web search, reading your files, running code, making documents and using apps.
Think of it as a fast, well-read junior colleague. It is excellent at first drafts, summaries, explanations and turning a clear description into a working version. It can also be confidently wrong, so you check facts, numbers and anything that matters.
The big four you will hear about are ChatGPT (OpenAI), Claude (Anthropic), Gemini (Google) and Grok (xAI). Microsoft's Copilot sits inside Microsoft 365. Malaysia also has ILMU from YTL AI Labs, built for Bahasa Melayu and local context.
Rule of thumb: the better you explain your situation, the better it works.
